I’ve just been reading Australian PC User (March 2008). In it, they review the DVX555U Set top box. This sounds like a great little device. Currently retailing for $69 AUD, it is a standard definition set top box that you can add your own IDE hard drive to give you a hard disk recorder (great when you have an old IDE disk lying around). Finally this is an economic option for those of us that just want to record the odd show. It has EPG and timer record, but its not clear to me if it supports an optical audio output.

You only get what you pay for, and there are limitations - the obvious being that it can only play back SD - it’s worth reading more about users experiences before buying.

Other hard disk recorders seem to start at the $600 AUD mark - for a comparison, see Good Gear Guide.

Blu-ray has won the battle against HD DVD - now we can get on with it.

The new year brings a bunch of great looking movies - lets hope they are as good as the previews:

I remember when the original Alien came on New Zealand television for the first time (probably in the 1980’s ?). They warned you not to watch it alone… and they were right. It was terrifying.

Now after 3 sequels and the Alien vs Predator mash-up, we are having ‘Alien vs Predator Requiem’ unleashed on us. And from the trailers on the official website, it will be terrifying again. It looks as gory as it is frightening - again, not for the faint hearted.

There is something spooky about seeing an Alien - which we came to fear so much - being man-handled by a Predator. Both powerful forces to reckon with, thanks to the creators for bringing them together in this series.
